WASA reports repairs are being made to a 8 inch water main on 18th St NE between Gales Pl NE and Benning Rd NE, affecting 50 residents. Estimated time of work completion is 8 to 10 hours. DDOT and FEMS have been notified.

Based on when the alert message was sent, the estimated repair time is between 11:30 pm and 1:30 am.

The Eastern Branch Task Force created by Councilmember Tommy Wells several months ago has continued meeting through the fall and early winter. They are ready to share their draft report, and have a few additional meetings scheuled in the coming weeks.

Tommy wants to host a community meeting to review the Task Force recommendations with neighbors, and get more resident feedback and suggestions. As you may have also seen in the news, the city recently completed the purchase of the Boys & Girls Club buildings (including the Eastern Branch). The District will be able to gain control of the facilities very shortly.

Chuck Burger, chair of the Task Force, is working with its members to arrange the details for the public meeting that Tommy will host. As soon as that meeting is set, we will post information here and send announcements out to the community.

JO Wilson Elementary School's principal, Cheryl Warley, was recognized this school year by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) as a National Distinguished Principal. The National Distinguished Principal program was established 15 years ago to honor exemplary elementary and middle-school principals who “set the pace, character, and quality” of the education children receive.

Since taking over at J.O. Wilson in 2002, Principal Warley has worked to increase parent participation, including creating a parent resource center with computers and one-on-one mentoring. Under her leadership, the school has made its Annual Yearly Progress goals for four consecutive years and its French program continues to be recognized nationally.

She’s built strong ties with the neighborhood, area civic associations, and other groups to make J.O. Wilson a model for community partnerships. With these strong relationships supporting her efforts, she’s overseen the complete renovation of the school library and the school grounds – both are now state-of-the-art facilities.
